Are You Normal for Your Age?
Degree Show Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design. June
2002
‘Are You Normal for Your Age?’ is an installation piece
comprising 8 wooden figures mounted on the wall and sound. It refers
it the
clinical gaze and particularly to the developmental assessment of
children and the expectation that they fall within a normal range.
The piece is based on an inset puzzle used to assess children’s
language development in paediatric clinics, the standardised questions
have been subverted and become ambiguous and sinister. The viewer
is placed in the position of the child with language problems being
asked to answer incomprehensible questions.
